Joint Graduate School in Coastal and Marine Science

Welcome from the Director

New Zealand is a maritime nation whose national identity is intricately linked to its coasts and oceans. Our past, present and future is linked to the oceans through cultural heritage, climate, food supply, economic development and recreational use. Increased competition and pressure on coastal and marine resources has placed a premium on improving our scientific understanding of our nationally significant coastal and ocean systems.

The University of Auckland and National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) have joined forces to form the Joint Graduate School in Coastal and Marine Science with the specific purpose to build New Zealand’s research expertise on these critical issues.

The JGS provides the unique opportunity to undertake postgraduate research across a range of coastal and marine topics alongside New Zealand’s leading scientists. We also have a talented group of postgraduate students from around the world who help to provide a stimulating and supportive environment for your studies. I hope you will consider joining the JGS in Coastal and Marine Science for your postgraduate research experience.
